Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour

Our Local offer:

Thanet District Council has made a commitment to our residents to ensure that they are able to report incidents of ASB and to be confident that we are tackling the problems.

What is Anti-Social Behaviour

Anti-social is classified as:

“Any action that is or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household as the perpetrator” (Crime and Disorder Act 1998 – section 1)

Examples of Anti-social Behaviour are:

Persistent Noise nuisance

Intimidation and Harassment

Aggressive and threatening behaviour

Actual violence against people and property

Racial Abuse

How do I report Anti-Social Behaviour and Neighbour Nuisance

Anti-social behaviour and neighbour nuisance (ASB) can be reported to us by anyone, directly, indirectly or by a third-party such as the Police or Social Services by:

  • Telephone to your Housing Officer on 01843 577262
  • Visit to The Gateway Offices, Cecil Street, Margate
  • Letter addressed to Housing Estates
  • E-mail to housing @thanet.gov.uk

What will we do when we receive your report of ASB?

We will take every incident of ASB seriously and conduct a proper investigation with an open mind.

We will tell who is dealing with your complaint and keep you up to date with any progress.

Complaints will be treated with the appropriate confidentiality.

Referrals will be made to the Witness and Victim Support officer where appropriate to support the complainant.

Provide tenancy support where this might help reduce the problems being caused by the household.

Investigating Complaints

Your Housing Officer will investigate the report and gather as much information from you as possible about the ASB. They can do this by phone or at an interview with you in your home. We can arrange for you to visit the office if you are worried about us conducting the visit at your property.

If the perpetrator is known we will contact them, with your permission and interview them about the allegations.

Where the perpetrator is unknown, the Housing Officer will work closely with you and any other witnesses to gather evidence to identify who is responsible.

Evidence is gathered in many ways including:

  • Interviews
  • Witness statements
  • Nuisance diaries
  • CCTV

The information we collect will then be reviewed and if there is evidence, we will take action to tackle the ASB.
