Thinking of getting a pet?
STOP!
Do you live in a flat or
maisonette?
Have you got permission from the
council?
Before getting a pet, you must make
sure you obtain permission from your Housing
Officer.
If you get a pet without asking
permission, you may be asked to re-home it.
We understand that many
people enjoy keeping pets and animals, but we also know
that pets are a common cause of a lot of anti-social behaviour
complaints, including:
- Noise nuisance
- The pet behaving aggressively
- Fouling in the public area (which can result in a fine)
What does your tenancy say?
- Pets and animals should not cause a nuisance to neighbours
- The size and location of your home needs to be suitable for
keeping pets
- If you live in a flat or maisonette you need to ask the
council's permission if you want to keep a cat or a dog
If you are in doubt, have a chat with
your Housing Officer.
Insure your pet - it will save you
money
The law requires you to look after
your pet properly. If you have a pet, you should get pet
insurance. Pets need medical treatment more than you might
expect, and it can become very expensive. For a few
pounds each month your pet's bills will be covered -
potentially saving you thousands of pounds. Please consider
your pet AND your finances and insure your pet as soon as
possible.
You can compare pet insurance prices
at websites such as the ones below, or talk to your vet.
