Sheltered accommodation

Finding out more

There are two different types of housing for older people: sheltered schemes, and enhanced sheltered schemes.

Sheltered schemes

The services we offer

We make daily calls to tenants, during which the Scheme Manager will:

  • Visit those who do not respond or who are unwell by contacting GPs or Care Managers where necessary.  Also collect emergency prescriptions.
  • Welcome prospective new residents, show them around, signing tenancy agreements and assisting to complete necessary benefit forms.
  • Advise of any extra benefits that residents may be entitled to.
  • Complete needs assessments and support plans for new residents.  Each resident's needs are regularly reviewed.
  • Check fire alarms and emergency pull cords on a regular basis, reporting any faults.
  • Monitor maintenance of scheme buildings, for example checking that the cleaning is being carried out, grounds maintenance, gardens, repairs, lifts and making provisions for emergencies such as power cuts.

Enhanced sheltered schemes

The services we offer

Enhanced schemes are generally for residents with higher dependency needs and are staffed by a manager and six support workers.  Two additional support workers go between the four schemes to provide additional cover.  Each scheme has staff to provide a sleepover service.  The enhanced staff deliver the same service as the sheltered housing scheme managers in addition to the services listed below.

  • Bathing service - although all flats/bungalows have baths or showers, residents can use the communal amenities where provided if they require them.  Assistance will be provided by the support staff and the use of the communal shower/bath area will be allocated on a rota basis.
  • Medication - assistance with medication can be given up to four times a day by support staff.  The Scheme Manager can also organise for monthly repeat prescriptions to be set up with the local pharmacy.
  • Laundry - if required, the support staff can do the resident's laundry.  This incurs a small charge.
  • Lunch club - a daily lunch service is provided, if required, through a local provider.  This also incurs a small charge.
  • General support - in addition to the above, each enhanced scheme provides support services to residents through arranging entertainments, coffee mornings, and so on.  Support plans are maintained on a regular basis.
